Temitope Adebiyi After an lmpressive 2:0 victory over Iceland on Friday courtesy of an Ahmed Musa’s brace , the Super Eagles of Nigeria know they have their fate in their own hands. A victory or a Draw is enough to see them make it to the second round.
Here are 5 reasons why the Super Eagles will get exactly what they need to make it through to the next round. 1) CONFIDENCE GOTTEN The Super Eagles needed a huge confidence going to the World Cup, and this they failed to get, after losing their last two friendly matches. The lack of confidence was reflected in the first game hence why they showed the not-so- impressive Croatians too much of respect. Victory against the Iceland on Friday has definitely given the team a confidence boost, as this can be attested to by former Green Eagles Player Segun Odegbami “The morning after. Things have changed around here. There is a fresh feeling of confidence, and Nigerians are walking around with a swagger. That’s what winning does” With full confidence against Argentina, it will be nearly impossible to crack down the youthful Nigerian team. 2) Argentina sloppiness and internal crisis For a team who struggled to qualify for the World Cup, and had to bank on their talismanic Lionel Messi’s hat trick in the final game of the qualifying series to cement their place, it is obvious they are not the same very powerful team that they used to be and most unfortunately their major hit man is also struggling in a competition where the team is suffering from internal crisis. The team internal crises took another turn on Saturday as the players were asked to choose the team to play against Nigeria and not the coach as revealed by www.google.com/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-5878183/amp/Argentina-players-decide-team-World-Cup-clash-Nigeria-camp-descends-anarchy.html With the Coach rendered powerless in the team, and the likelihood that he might not be on the bench in the final game, the team spirit is already down and with some players being tagged “Senior players” the supposed “Junior players” are already psychologically down ahead of the game. 3) Nigeria history of making the second round anytime they win a game during the World Cup. Nigeria has always made it to the second round of the World Cup whenever they succeed in winning a game in the group stage of the World Cup. In USA 94, the super eagles defeated Greece and Bulgaria to qualify for the second round before losing to Italy in the second round. In France 98, the Nigerian side led by Uche Okechuwu saw off Spain 3:2, and a lone strike by Victor Ikpeba also saw Nigeria overcome a resilient Bulgarian side led by Stoickov to make it to the next round. Brazil 2014 also saw Nigeria draw Iran and defeat Bosnia 1:0 before losing to Argentina in the final game to make it to the second round before crashing out after losing 0:2.
