It was in 1989 that Gary Lineker left Tottenham Hotspur to join the Catalan giants. Since then, no Englishman has made a headline transfer rumour or actualized any transfer. The wait was finally put to an end on Wednesday when Marcus McGuane, an Arsenal FC youth graduate came in to replace Aleix Vidal in the Catalan Cup against Espanyol. McGuane joined Barcelona FC in January from Arsenal. He had only played a total of 13 minutes first team match for Arsenal in Europa League matches against Red Star Belgrade and BATE Borisov.
Gary Lineker, having seen McGuane listed in the team for the match, wished his good luck. Barcelona FC went ahead to win the match 4-2 on penalties. Ousmane Dembele, Aleix Vidal, Jasper Cillesen and Dennis Suarez were senior team members who also played in the match.
The Catalan Cup is a contest played every two years between Barcelona and Espanyol, being the two biggest Catalan teams.
